Well-Prepared for Marriage

Before coming to Haven of Hope, I (Kari) struggled to communicate openly and initiate conversations about things that were important to me. During our week of mentoring, we spent intentional time talking through difficult topics. Ian gained a deeper understanding of why communication can be challenging for me, and he learned how to encourage and help me engage in those conversations. That experience has helped me grow tremendouslyand given us greater confidence in communicating with one another.
One of the greatest areas of growth for both of us was communication. While we had already worked through many issues before coming to Haven of Hope, we discovered there was still so much more to learn about understanding each other. I (Ian), coming from a background of sexual bondage, was able to see how differently Kari experiences and processesthe effects of sexual immorality. At the same time, Kari realized that sharing her fears, struggles, and emotions did not push me away—it drew me closer to her. We learned that honest, Christ-centered communication strengthens trust, deepens intimacy, and builds a stronger foundation for marriage.
Our week at Haven of Hope was both meaningful and life-changing. The many hours spent talking, learning, and connecting on a deeper emotional and spiritual level brought us closer than either of us expected. We arrived as a recently engaged couple and left with a deeper relationship with God, a stronger understanding of one another, and practical tools to build a healthy, Christ-centered marriage.
We wholeheartedly recommend premarital mentoring at Haven of Hope to every engaged couple. Whether you feel well-prepared for marriage or believe you have already worked through most major issues, the investment is invaluable. Haven of Hope helped us address and enter marriage with greater unity and confidence. It was one of the best investments we could have made in our future together.

Kent & Kim Karnemaat
Nothing Boring about the HOH Board!
It is a joy to introduce you to our board members: Kent & Kimberly Karnamaat
Kent and Kimberly met in middle school and married in 1986. They have ten children and twelve grandchildren. Kent is an agribusiness owner, and a few years ago, their farm celebrated 50 years. Kimberly is a stay-at-home mom and educator. She also assists Kent as an advisor and business partner. In addition to serving on the HOH board, Kent serves on another ministry board, and Kim is currently involved with a Classical Christian Homeschool group and enjoys tutoring for the high school level.
“We met Steve and April at a marriage conference and decided to attend an intensive week at HOH. Both of us would have told you that we had a healthy, thriving marriage, but that week was a healing step that we didn’t know we needed. A deeper awareness of who we are was revealed and has been a help to us every day since. Community-Wide Open House to Celebrate Haven of Hopes New Marriage Ministry Center
A new chapter of hope is beginning in our community, and you are invited to celebrate. On Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 3:00–7:00 PM, Haven of Hope Ministry will officially open its new ministry center with a family-friendly community open house.
More than a ribbon-cutting, this special event will bring friends and neighbors together for an afternoon of fellowship, entertainment, food, and fun while highlighting the ministry’s mission of strengthening marriages and families.
Guests will enjoy a free dinner, live entertainment, games, and activities for all ages. Featured entertainment includes Ryan & Friends, a comedic ventriloquist performance for the whole family. Local vendor booths will also provide opportunities to connect with community organizations, ministry partners, and area resources.
The open house will feature a volleyball tournament for those who enjoy friendly competition. Registration is required, and all participants will receive a complimentary Haven of Hope T-shirt. Advance registration is also required for the free meal.
The new ministry center reflects Haven of Hope’s ongoing commitment to supporting healthy marriages and strong families through free one-on-one couples mentoring and faith-based support. The ministry hopes the facility will serve as a place of healing, restoration, and hope for years to come.
“The dream of this ministry center became a reality through the generosity of those who gave financially, donated materials, and volunteered their time and skills,” says founder and president Steve Swartz. “The open house is for everyone in the community to come and learn more about the ministry and simply enjoy the day with us. Whether you come for the volleyball tournament, the music, the food, or simply to connect with others, we warmly invite you to join us for this special celebration.”
